Evolutionary biologists are beginning to see that: “There are many roads to Rome, but Rome is not what it used to be”.

The wonderful world-wide-web of life

Note the image above is more web-like than tree-like. The main title of this blog is a quote within an article recently posted in Science Daily (see link below). While you are reading the article, do keep in mind that many studies, particularly in more recent years, are beginning to clearly show that our conventional (Darwinian) idea of how evolution proceeded may be hugely inadequate to describe something as complex as EVOLUTION. Even in its most modern form, traditional concepts of the  drivers and mechanisms for this change – (macro-evolution for example),  is coming under increasing strain in the light of new and exciting studies emerging from biology labs from around the globe.

The article below is only a tip of the iceberg but should give the reader some food-for-thought as it hints at some of the challenges facing our current understanding of evolution today. Basically, as the title of this blog implies, the course of evolution took many routes to get this complex and therefore, evolution may not be the neat linear branching progression of lineages through time that we once believed.

I am glad to see that the Science Daily article does not over-emphasize the  natural selection mechanism as a driver of big change and, it also touches upon the fact that there is much more to evolution than meets the eye. I think even Science Daily is beginning to get the bigger picture here, even if it is still clinging a bit too tightly to the old Darwinian paradigm (like a child trying to keeps its favourite teddy bear for a little while longer).  But I’ll give credit where it is due: Science Daily is well on its way to allowing this new science to filter through to the mainstream.
